'Rapists are potential murderers'

The terror of a rape attempt

I have a statement to make about rapists that the insensitive, misinformed saints who make it so tough on a victim seem to overlook. That is, rapists are not basically nice guys who just need to let off steam. Anyone aggressive enough to grab a woman off the street or break into her apartment is likely to use his fists or a knife to subdue her.

They are dangerous people and should be considered potential murderers.

If there were more homosexual rapists forcing their "affections" on men returning home from the office or bowling alley, at gunpoint, there would no doubt be a lot more understanding and agreement on how repulsive and terrifying an unwanted sexual encounter can be.

I've never been raped, but I was unsuccessfully grabbed once a block from home and the intent was clear. But it was the violence in his face that still haunts me and has made me paranoid. I tried to scream but wasn't able to when that man came at me; I was too frightened.

So to the man who said to me last week, “I wish someone would rape`me!”, I say, may all your wishes come true. And so that you may fully appreciate the ex-

perience, I hope your rapist is a lot bigger and meaner than mine.

CHRISTINE WALLIS 44 S. Main St., Chagrin Falls

I am writing in appreciation of The Plain Dealer's editorial support for my ordinance proposing a rape squad and revision of procedures dealing with the problems of sexual assault in the city of Cleveland.

Your concern, as evidenced by the knowledgeable series of articles by Ms. Rosemary Kovacs and the aforementioned editorial position, is comforting to myself, and I'm sure to hundreds of our citizens, both male and female, who have become more increasingly aware of the difficulties faced by the victims of forcible rape.

It is now time to assume the responsibilities of a humane society and recognize and understand the improper public atti-

tudes of the past, and make the necessary changes.

CAROL MCCLENDON Councilman, 28th Ward, 3627 E. 108th St., Cleveland.

After having heard directly of the experiences of a rape victim, I most thoroughly agree with Councilman Carol McClendon that specially trained rape units are needed in the Cleveland area. The psychological effect upon the victim can be most damaging if the victim is not properly treated.

I would urge all concerned citizens to support Ms. McClendon's legislation recently presented to Cleveland City Council. Concerned citizens can change thingslet's do it.
